An article contributed by Studio Next to Fashion Era magazine on the impact of the global economic meltdown on the Indian garment industry.
Published Date : March 2009
India´s garment industry is largely made up of small and medium-sized firms that have been quite slow in adopting modern technology. There are various reasons for this sluggish pace of technology adoption, including garment makers´ inability to make investment in better technology, cheap labor that´s available to them, and lack of information about cost-effective technology solutions.
This technological obsolescence has come into sharp relief as India´s garment industry has begun to globalize and face ever-intensifying competition from other countries. The competition is not limited to the global market; it also presents a real challenge to the industry in its domestic market. India´s garment industry is one of the largest employers among all sectors, employing about 2crore people. It’s also one of the most dynamic industries that caters to not only the huge domestic industry, but has also conquered many demanding foreign markets, generating over Rs.50, 000 crore of yearly revenues.

The Impact of the Global economic meltdown is obviously leaving its mark on the Indian Garment Industry and in turn on the yearly revenues of our country. As the demand for products has decreased, it has directly hit the exporters by way of fewer orders from buyers. Also buyers have become more demanding, they want more value from what they pay to exporters. Garment exporters in order to survive and get orders are succumbing to the pressures coming from their buyers. This also means that the exporters are facing a huge pressure to cut costs. They are compelled to:
  • Reduce labor costs.
  • Put off capital goods investments.
  • Delay their capacity expansions if planned.
  • Re-negotiate with suppliers for better prices on things outsourced and asking for more credit period.
We look with hope at government’s efforts to help and support the exporters. The garment industry has started to look away from their traditional markets such as USA and Europe.

We as cad/cam solution providers are facing these cost cutting pressures. Here we come across exporters having 2 different kinds of attitudes. An exporter, who positively looks at technology investment or up gradation as a step towards cutting manual labor costs, increased productivity and efficiency in their work. And an exporter with a conservative approach who prefers to hold on to his purchases and investments till a later date until markets have stabilized.

Studio Next Inc., a fast-growing technology vendor to the garment industry, has been engaged in providing design skills and personnel to the garment makers, providing training in Richpeace garment CAD software and fashion and textile design software, which has a rapidly growing user-base in the garment industry. We are offering solutions which help in boosting the productivity and efficiency of work. Our solutions are value for money products without a compromise on the quality of work it delivers. Thus an exporter or a domestic garment manufacturer can invest in low cost solutions to achieve good results even at a time of recession. Also being directly in contact with our business partners in China the Richpeace group, we are constantly upgrading our products and coming out with better affordable and value for money solutions, especially with respect to the Indian Market. The current economic decline encompassing the globe has also affected us as can be cited in a recent example, where I bagged an order at a very ridiculous price as the exporter was adamant on his price and his terms. I had to agree on his terms in spite of the dollar having touched the Rs.51 mark, means no profits on this order, except that we get an order even in this period of recession, rather than losing the order.

Following are the measures that we have been taking to survive this economic meltdown:
  • Targeting those customers who are looking at consolidating their various departments by using technology rather than going for further expansion
  • Trying to be as accommodative as possible
  • Trying to provide better training support
  • Planning to undertake more job works catering to those garment manufacturers who are not ready yet to invest in technology but would like to use the services of CAD
  • Also exploring other markets where new garment manufacturing units are coming up like Indore, Calcutta, Surat, Jaipur, etc. and targeting both garment exporters and domestic garment manufacturers.
